Changing default folder icon in xp sp2 proving VERY difficult

need some advice from someone with far more computer know how than myself.
I have tried using several icon programmes and none of them can manage to change the default yellow folder icons in xp. Icontweaker, e-icons etc. I have also tried using reshacker to change the shell32.dll in the sys32 folder and followed advice I read on a web site to also make sure to write over the copy in the dllcache folder but somhow the original is still being preserved from somewhere else, what other backups do I need to make sure to replace? and where are they. I am using xp home sp2.

I used IconTweaker which does the job fine (although the default icons included with it are horrible). I'm on XP Home SP2 too.

Hi all, my first post, just to let you know, hope I'm not to late with the answer. Tray changing display from 32bit to 16bit color and than change it back to 32bit again. I have replaced all of my folder icons by editing shell32.dll, explorer.exe etc. and I've had the same problem and solved it this way. Hope it helps.

i'm assuming you already have reshack and replacer. if not get them here.

reshack
http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/
replacer
http://www3.telus.net/_/replacer/

you've to mod shell32.dll, mydocs.dll, shdoclc.dll, shdocvw.dll.

after you're thru with them, you don't just write over the original files. in fact, they won't thanx to windows file protection. after reshacking them, save them in a different folder (pref a safe folder accessible only by you) but by the same name. fire up replacer then first select and drag the original file from windowssystem32 folder into the replacer window. then select and drag "your file with the same name" from "your folder" into the replacer window. hit 'y' at the confirmation and any key to exit it.

now reboot, and navigate to
c:Documents and Settings"your user"Local SettingsApplication Data
and delete
IconCache.db

next fire up tweakui, and run a repair icons. that's it!
