Looking for a cursor editor and SnIco Edit

Seems like all the cursor editors are shareware. Anyone know of a freeware one? Basically, all an icons needs is the deffined hotspot, to my understanding. Then it's a cursor. Am I wrong? Does it only have one image instead of a series of them, or one size with multiple color depth images?

Maybe I should contact brub on this. He always seemed to know a lot about mouse cursors.

I have a little app from microsoft somewhere that does the trick. Even though it is a win95/98 (not sure) era app it works perfectly with XP style cursors. If you haven't got an answer before wednesday I will have a look trough some backup cd's when I get home (wednesday).

Did you ask Moshi? He created / ported from Gnome some great mouse cursor sets.

Edit: This scheme, the reg file he included is also fairly interesting http://www.customize.org/details/27898

Can you tell me anything about the app? I'm researching cursors as part of a personal project, and it might shed some light on the subject.

Not a lot, only that it has the same ugly look and interface as Microsoft GIF Animator :)

PK is talking about AniEdit, needs premade .cur files to create animation - IconArt seems to do it though, indeed, for free.

Animated cursors can only have one colordepth, static cursors can hold multiple colordepth images, but XP support is poor (it will choose the lesser version), so not a good idea.

And Snico is here for the moment.

Awesome. Thx guys. 8) That helps me out a lot.

I have another question too:
Can animated .gif files be used like .ani files?
How about .jpg/.png/.gif used as icons (esp .png and if it can use alpha blending)?

I guess that's the app, thought it had some more features though.

>Can animated .gif files be used like .ani files?
Within Windows to replace the folder animations and such? Nope, doesn't work.
EDIT: Oh, uhm... I didn't read that properly ;-) You are referring to animated cursors... Same answer though; no! .ani files are ms riff (see: http://www.oreilly.com/www/centers/gff/formats/micriff/) files. Basically some information meta information (app to create it, author, lenght of each frame, number of frames) and an icon for every frame cramped together. Im pretty sure there is some japanese app to convert gif into ani though ;-)

>How about .jpg/.png/.gif used as icons (esp .png and if it can use alpha blending)?
Same (from what I've tried at least), you have to convert them which should be fairly easy.

Be sure to include them in your article then :-)

I'm more focusing on what icons can do on thier own. Even what XP and 98 can do with them is rather secondary. That, and last i checked the site was down. It might fit into part of it tho. I'll sleep on it.

As far as the binary format is concerned, you're absolutely right; static cursors and icons differ only in the presence of hotspot fields. And in an icon, the fields are there, just set to zero (and ignored), so there is no real binary difference between the two (renaming a cursor .ico will work fine, vice-versa will work but the hotspot will be undefined)
