I'm not aware of anything other than what you've already tried (using a third party app like the PowerDesk thing or Agent Ransack).

The fact that the window definitions are still in the .dll doesn't mean they can be used. I think they're just leftovers from previous versions of the OS.

The thing is though, when we had Windows XP SP1 (we have SP2 now) I remeber specifically that my brother was able to switch to 98 find, but he only changed it in his account and he bragged to me that he was able to do it and I couldn't. I know it can be done.

Perhaps there is a registry entry in 98SE or NT4 that would help?

Unfortunely, those are to switch back to the Windows 2000 Search, which still uses an Explorer window

can you ask your brother how he was able to do that? because i have xp-pro sp1 (+some hotfixes) and want to use "98 style" search. at least i want to try it.
