I wrote this small prog for myself, however i decided to share it in case someone else decides they want to use it..
what it does..
it autohides the taskbar and icons from desktop, i use a "fake" taskbar on windows wallpaper so it looks nice
how does it work?
to hide desktop icons simply move the mouse within 1 cm of the far right of your screen and icons will disappear instantly
to bring them back move the mouse within 1cm of the top of your screen and they will reappear
move the mouse over the taskbar area and the taskbar will reappear, (and disappear once it has left the area)
this prog works in win9x, XP, and should work on all other versions of windows..
if you have any suggestions for improvements, let me know

Very cool little app, I'm sure lots of people here will find it very useful. One little issue I found though, it only works for a bottom positioned taskbar. It probaly should look to find where the taskbar is to set the hotspot area.

I have this running on two machines now, very nice. Unfortunately though, on one machine (laptop) I also use Samurize and when I move the mouse to the screen edge to hide the desktop icons, autohide_v2 hides the samurize meters instead.
Is there any workaround? Also, what is the proper way of shutting down the application? There is not tray icon, so I killed it through the task manager, but when I did this it left the task bar hidden.

Am using XP with the taskbar set to auto-hide via its Properties Page; when this configuration is used with this app the result is a minor flashing effect when the pointer moves to the bottom of the screen and Autohide unhides the minimized taskbar first. Is it possible to get rid of this effect while still having the taskbar auto-hide property selected? Perhaps lessen the size of the Autohide app's hotspot?
It's a nice little app now but some flexibility in configuration would make it really cool.

I made a couple of new versions..
I seperated the program into two, 1 just autohides the icons only
http://www.geocities.com/autohide_hompage/Autohide.Icons.v3.zip
and the 2nd one hides both taskbar and icons (updated to fix icons sometimes flickering) when the mouse is in the top right hand part of the screen
http://www.geocities.com/autohide_hompage/Autohide.Icons.and.taskbar.v3.zip
i'm thinking of adding more features especially if people actually use it, tho i want to keep it as small and efficent as possible, any ideas?
oh to shut down i use taskmanger, it was designed to leave the icons and taskbar visible on exit, i can add a tray icon if requested
Jestre i may need to find an alternate way of hiding icons (at the moment it disables desktop) but there are other ways to do it which should fix your prob with Samurize.. i should have a fix soon

I ran the Autohideicons.. is there anyway of getting the icons back without rebooting? It would be great if this could work similar to Eaticons ie.. run once to hide desktop icons, run again to show them.

Serenity are you aware that if you move your mouse to the top of your screen this will make the icons visible?.. as for quiting i'll make it so if it is loaded twice it will auto quit, just need a bit of time to make it happen

Hey, thanx 4 sharing your program.
I would like 2 B able 2 hide the icons by going 2 the left side of the desktop because icons align 2 the left. That would make the activator closer & therefore more convenient.
Also is it possible 2 have the same hotspot 4 hiding & unhiding the icons?

Finally an update ( version4 )
http://www.geocities.com/autohide_hompage/Autohide.Icons.and.taskbar.v4.zip
* Greatly improved method of hiding icons (Desktop is now left fully enabled), infact in win98 you can right click the desktop and hit refresh to bring your icons back, in Xp you have to find the unhide icons in your context menu to bring them back manually, or you can move the mouse to unhide of course
* Allows only 1 instance in case people accidently run it twice
* Added command line parameters (case sensitive):
-hoticonarea10
*sets the area needed at edge of screen needed to hide icons, (default (10) is about half of 1cm)
-hotbararea10
*sets the area surrounding the taskbar to unhide the taskbar (10 is default) (0 is taskbar exactly)
-desktoptest
*experimental (minimises actual desktop to a single draggle window instead of hiding it.. interesting, works in 98 and Xp)
-leftside
* hide icons using the left side of your screen, made for skywalka
-end
* will hide icons/desktop and quit leaving the windows hidden, not very useful but someone might want it

oh and yes skywalka it is definately possible 2 have the same hotspot 4 hiding & unhiding the icons, is a good idea i'll add it to the next ver

A cosmetic bug: If the Start Menu has a submenu that extends to the bottom of the screen and the pointer is moved to the bottom of that submenu the taskbar will unhide over the submenu. However, the selection will still be active even though it is obscured by the taskbar and one can click through the taskbar, opening up whatever was selected on the submenu even though it can't be seen.

Excellent! Thanks for the updates! Works great. I do have one more request
Would it be possible to specify a time before the icons are shown again, e.g. leave the pointer at the top of the screen for 1 second (or more) before they show up. All too often I move my mouse near the top of the screen to activate another window and accidentally activate the icons (drive by unhide, so to speak).
Thanks again.

next ver will have toggle icons on/off by just moving the mouse over the icon in the systray and launch my computer by moving the mouse to the left side of the screen

Serenity have you tried creating a shortcut to the autohide prog, and added the command line paramaters to the shortcut?
25 Nov. 2004 - 13:56

I found that the dots and spaces in the names meant having to put the whole path in commas, and so adding commandline options was interpreted as changing the targets path. It works now I've moved it and renamed a few things.

Another version anyone?
http://www.geocities.com/autohide_hompage/Autohide.Icons.v6.zip
(fixed small bug in win98)
this one as described above toggles icons on/off by simply moving the mouse over the icon in the systray, so dont actually need to click the icon (2 sec delay applies after toggled on/off), also *new* launches my computer by moving the mouse to the left side of your screen.. seeing if i can make icons on the desktop redundant, later on i can add stuff like view desktop files in a folder window easily enough or open disk drives etc
progress is going well for replacing icons altoghether, i am now able to access nearly every possible directory / file windows has to offer without the use of any icons

which means a completly skinnable file / folder launcher is just round the corner for sneakpreview you can dl
http://www.geocities.com/autohide_hompage/Rocketlauncher.zip
for any tweakers out there here something that might come in handy, did you know you can access special folders in a command line? just type or cut paste the line exactly

Are these new versions supposed to work with both the icons and the taskbar? I updated to v6, but nothing I do brings my taskbar back.
Ok, the thing needs a website so I can post a news article on it. A one-pager with a screenshot (before and after would work effectively on this one), download link, description, and news (just version updates are enough, really). You can organize it how you like, but those are the basics you need to have an informative page.
If you can throw something together, I'll post this on the front page here on VP.

If you need a hand, I'll put it together for you if you send me the info. I can do basic html very quickly, but know the learning curve is a pain when starting.
Hosting... hmmm... I'll have to talk to someone to see if can get you a lil hosting for a one page thing. Geocities is not the place for something like this.
I'm currently having a bug where the task bar is staying on autohide even when exiting the program. I'll try to see if another version fixes that, but that does need to be addressed before posting. I'm basically having the same problem as Jest. This is on an XP machine.
I tried out all the versions. The most recent one worked like a dream. Using it right now in fact. That seems to be working great (though for a sec it wouldn't show my icons, but I haven't been able to repeate the bug). The taskbar ones don't work. All had the bug where is put the taskbar on somehting like autohide, but you can't get it back at all on the program's exit.
What are your plans to do from here?

Sorry guys havent had time to do much lately, the last few versions shouldnt be hiding or unhiding the taskbar at all since hiding the taskbar needs a bit of finetuning (cosmetic bug) see ncoronel's message above so i've left the taskbar alone for now, i have been working on icon replacements, real bitmaps (any shape or size with transparency) being displayed on the desktop and when you click on them they execute commands like normal icons, i have had it working for a while just need to make it as flexible as possible, and user friendly.. i have lots of ideas on how it will work and it will be fun to use, so people can start making skins now if they want cause it's only a matter of time for a release.. i dont want to release prematurely and confuse people, i want it to be as complete as possible.. here is a short list of things you will be able to do
* use any bitmap image as a shortcut to any of windows commands (also see
http://www.geocities.com/autohide_hompage/Rocketlauncher.zip for extended commands)
* any bitmap size, shape or position
* to add a new shortcut you simply drag n drop the file to be executed to any of the displayed icon pictures, then a new icon picture will be created with a choice of skin
i'll release a public version asap

oh and red thanks for the offer, i'd appreciate any help in setting up a proper home page, i dont get alot of time spare time, at the moment the program simply hides unhides icons, i'd like to also release the icon replacement program (Rocketlauncher) before it becomes to public

Sounds good. Btw, if you are adding skins for icons (I guess you could say), then it would be cool if you could have them change on hover (maybe click too). Don't know how hard that would be to do, but I know it has been requested before.
Also, I would like to request a simple version be kept around. One that just auto-hid the icons, yet used as little resources as possible. Keeps it simple.

hmm, big "icons". sounds like desktopframes to me...
06 Dec. 2004 - 10:21
rt07
The picture changes on click (mouse down), which is very cool in action =) hover can be added no probs, but i'll wait for animation to come first.. also they move individually like a normal icon, so you can move em around and it autosaves to the ini file when moved..
definately doing everything i can to keep it simple.. it's still early days, but i'll let people test drive it, feel free to edit the ini file just make sure you keep everything in the same format and dont have a (enter) (carridge return) at the end of the ini file as it is very fussy at the moment
also note (9) items max at this stage, this is easy to increase when i get around to it..
edit the ini file and link to any file or folder you want
http://www.geocities.com/autohide_hompage/Rocket.Launcher.v2.zip
(prog=36k) + skins=(209k)
btw bitmap icons can be as small or big as you want
right mouse click = end program, at the moment autohide icons and rocket launcher are 2 differnt progs, but eventually i'll give rocket launcher the abilty to autohide icons etc, if people can post skins that would be great

Cool app
Some issues: I found if I ran it from within explorer (double click on .exe) the earth icon shows on top of all windows, and is movable like a message box. After minimizing explorer or making another window active, it is on the desktop. Is there a way of making it bottom-most and binding it to the desktop? I can move it over both Trillian and Winamp's windows, for example, which is odd for an icon. I've not tested this running from startup yet.

small update..
http://www.geocities.com/autohide_hompage/Rocket.Launcher.v2.5.zip
this one is a bit more user friendly in that you can drag n drop any file onto an existing picture icon and it will auto create a new picture icon with a link to the file that was dropped on the picture icon, try draggin a mp3 or something, also if you drop a bmp file then it will use that as a new skin ( it will ask if you want it as primary pic or secondary ).. also the prog will detect if the dropped file is a drive, folder or file and give it an appropriate icon picture
max 30 items (increased)
also made it "always on bottom" works 99% of the time
(new window will be underneath all other windows)
bug note.. dont drag and drop my computer to the prog
still nowhere near final ver, just showing progress and getting new ideas of people
vote: do you prefer drag n drop or manually editing the ini file?

yay, update!
v2.5 takes a looong time to load on my box, not sure why. Everything slows down as it loads. v2 ran quite fast, but only showed the earth icon, whereas v2.5 shows them all.
Unfortunately right-clicking on one of the icons closes all icons. Not sure if this is intentional. I'd prefer it if it worked on a per-icon basis, and updated the .ini file accordingly, perhaps removing the icons entry? Maybe as a compromise there'd be a value in the .ini file that could give the user both options.
A means of refreshing/reloading the .ini file via an icon would be really useful, especially for trying out new configs quickly.

Maybe this could be done with a hotkey as modifier, eg. holding down Ctrl whilst right-clicking the icon would reload the .ini file.
I find the drag'n drop cumbersome as I normally run explorer maximised. As for a preference, I'm gonna go with the .ini file.
I'm a little confused about the screen co'ords in the .ini file, the values shown don't correspond to my sense of the desktop running at 800x600. Its not really a big issue at all, if you copy the co'ords from another icon its easy enough to move them around on the desktop, though I'm finding its not restoring the last layout very well with the icons supplied. I found this isn't the case when using fewer icons. Also, this really doesn't like loading two icons with the same co'ords. It sends the CPU usage to 100%.
I found you can run more than one instance of this, it would be great if running a new instance replaced the old instance automatically.
btw, keep up the good work!

Very nice app, great stuff.
Would it be possible to have the launching of My Computer automatically disabled if the -leftside option is selected? The left of the screen is the only free spot I have for toggling the icons, which is great, but it doesn't seem possible to do this without explorer opening.

also it came to my attention that the command line parameters wernt always working when multiple commands were added so i have made a new version which fixes this (v7.5) visit

i also decided to make the -nicebar option default since this is a nice option especially for winXP, so xp users grab this latest version
http://www.geocities.com/autohide_hompage/Autohide.Icons.and.Taskbar.zip
* now default, my computer launches when the mouse is moved to the left of the screen and left mouse button is clicked
* added command line -hidefulltaskbar for people who still want to hide the whole taskbar
* also now default the mouse move feature is turned off so turning on/off icons is done via left clicking (more reliable and painfree) added command line -mousemoveon for people who like the old way

demlak try mycomponclick9 or something since that button dosent exist it'll never activate but i should make a lite version since what you want is very minimal, actually why dont you download
http://www.geocities.com/autohide_hompage/Toggle.Icons.zip
then create a shortcut to toggle Icons.exe, then goto properties on the shortcut and create a shortcut key maybe the minus "-" on your keypad then move the shorcut somewhere in your start menu..
then u can press - any time to turn icons on/off and not keep a program running to do it
i know if windows does a screen refresh (F5), which windows pretty much does at random, this will make icons visible in win98 so might be the same in win2k

I always wanted something like this and finnaly decided to look. Nice and small. Even made the lefside command. EXCELLENT! Will be reccomending.
Should be in windows by default.
One thing I might would change is if you have the start menu open (maybe something simular) it disables.. but I can live with it since it keeps it smaller.

Did you get the help.txt file inside the zip file? i added it a day or so ago, you might need to download again..
-mycomponclick2 would bring up mycomputer using the right mouse button instead of left mouse button, 1=left, 2=right, 4=middle
-baronclick1 is for people who want to bring the taskbar back using a left mouse click, instead of just moving to the taskbar area you would have to click as well..

again 1=left, 2=right, 4=middle
whoops theres an undocumented option, better fix that
-tray (autohides the systray)

Sweet, thank you. Didn't notice the zip my bad, I only played with the beta a few mintues untill today. Also, I like the beta... I saw the taskbar fade - I was looking for the icons to do it and said holy cow! That looks awesome! Does windows do that by default? I think I had mine on fade untill this morning (it is now on scroll) yet never saw that effect but this still fades.
Also, for me anyhow using the non-beta leaving the mycomp command to 0 uses left mouse click. The other options do not work. So to turn it off I leave it on an alternate otherwise it is on by default.
The only thing about the beta so far is the -leftside command doesn't seem to work. (Not sure aout the rest) But you know what.. I think it is fine as it is because I notice I hit the leftside on accident more than the top. (I can reach up there I am not that lazy.. or am I? lol)
I turned off the autohide taskbar this morning and it left a gap, but that was easily fixed by turning back on autohide taskbar in windows. (Which I like better anyhow. /me thinks, used to it anyway)
Just in case you ever decide to update it, not sure you can fix this but there is a "rim or lip" on the top of the taskbar that looks like it is not locked although it is. To see what I mean unlock it then lock it back. No biggie though.
I will look at them both more tonight probably.. the systray thing didn't work but I might not have something right. (Just noticed that on the website it is -systray. but the help text is -tray. Maybe that is what it is. I will look at it later.
Thanks again for this program!

Hey, really awesome program, thanks for sharing it!
This may sound a little noob but, how do u actually work the options? like where do u physically type them in? :S
Cheers.

Hi Phyxius, probably the easiest way is to create a shortcut to the autohide.exe file, try dragging the .exe file with your right mouse button then choose create shortcut here, then right click on the shortcut and choose properties, then add commands to the target box, so it should look something like this:
"D:\Utils\Autohide\Autohide.Icons.exe" -topleft -noicon
then run the program by clicking on the shortcut, you can add as many commands as you like... good luck

thx for an excellent app.
I am not a coder, though I badly wish I could be able to hack the code to suit my needs.
Anyways, here is a request...
I have about 6 textless icons on my desktop at the very bottom of the screen. I always wanted to have like a bottom 'icon tray', which shows up when I move the cursor in the bottom area (60 pix above the bottom edge) and again hides itself when the mouse is elsewhere on desktop or in any other app.
Can you please do the app so that one can customise (top, left, right, bottom) toggle area for icons only??
Thx,

Hey I am so ashamed to say this, but don't know how to use the code. I guess its in VB. It must be only a matter of changing the value in there, but I need the activation area to be, like more than double of the existing value....I guess the value is about 20 just now, Iif so then I need about 50-55....I use big icons with a top mac like taskbar......can you help??

wow glad you liked it
takes no time to modify, hard part is uploading to geocities.. anyway i made it double the hotarea as default and let you change it to whatever size you want..
added -botarea100
100 is default about 5 cms, change it to whatever u want

Million thanks mate, it works cool!
I noticed something though.....the Avedesk has taken over my desktop now.....so I can either run avedesk or the autohide icons.....
This is bizarre as earlier, when I was using it I am pretty sure that I had both running at the same time and both worked ok.
Any ideas what went wrong??

Hey rt07,
I tried the other program Rocket Launcher...that looks pretty sleek!!
I use avedesk to get the mac like shortcuts on my desktop....I guess in future I can look forward to use launcher to do the same...

Hey rt07,...
i hope you are still reading here...
there is something i would prefer in autohide..
first of all.. im still using it.. its one of the greatest app in this world =)
is it possible to get autohide still working after coming back from screensaver and after login?
when i lock my workstation with "win + l" and then logging in again, icons are not hidden anymore..
same on screensaver...
would be nice, to have the icons still hidden, when coming back to the workstation...
thx a lot

How do I uninstall?
I want to install only the version that hides the icons.
Hiding the Taskbar is too annoying.

Hello, rt07, and thanks for this great app, which I have just found about yesterday!
I have tried all versions and am currently running 8.2 with parameters to autohide all on start, icons and taskbar.
The only drawback I see is the lack of a TOGGLE ACTION FOR THE TASKBAR, like there is for the icons.
Is it possible to add this feature? At this time the only work-around I have found is to run the early version "Toggle Taskbar" from the start menu and run Autohide.Icons.v8.2 with "-donthidetaskbar" parameter.
Another suggestion would be a full hide (NO start button) where the start menu is only activated from the keyboard Windows key. Most keyboards have this key, I believe it would be a great feature to add.
You could even use the windows key as the taskbar toggle (if that's technically feasible, of course).
Thanks again for the great app, hope you are still interested in refining it further

Tweetipi, you can stop the app by right-clicking the icon in the notification area of the taskbar (usually bottom right).
To prevent the app from hiding the taskbar, using version 8.2 run the app with the "-donthidetaskbar" parameter. It's all explained in the Help.txt file.
As a work-around to toggle the taskbar on and off independently I use v.8.2 in conjunction with an early version of Toggle Taskbar you can download from the main geocities site, running it directly from the start menu (just drag and drop the app onto the start menu)
Hope it helps.

Hi there, I guess I did not post my message in the right place (see my post at the main level of this forum)...
I just wanted to let you know that after my last NOD32 update, autohide icons 8.2, that I have been using for so long, was suddenly flagged and promptly put in quarantine for having a Win32/Agent CIRERJS trojan!!! (yeah, right!) It was a simple matter of adding it to the exclusion list, but I can imagine all the distraught users finding their faithful autohide icons vanished from their hard drive! So Folks, check your antivirus/anti malware app and tell it to behave, it is probably the culprit!
Again I would like to let you know this is one of the greatest utilities for Windows ever created. It lets you truly enjoy your desktop as a picture frame, while allowing you to quickly get to the stuff you're working on. With autohide taskbar, a must for cramped screen real estate.
