Spacing in the Status Bar

Hello everyone. There is one thing for which I really want win95 back... what 98 does to my status bar. I like so see how big the files in a given folder are at a quick glance. But thats not always possible because that info is in the middle "pane", the one that isn't even visible if the window is less than 500px wide. And the other two parts waste so much space! Is it possible to give either the middle part a minimum width, so it does not vanish for smaller windows or make the others much smaller, resulting again in a visible middle pane? Removing the right one completely would be ok too, thanks to ToolbarControl it appears empty anyway.
Any ideas how to do this?

Good question. I would suspect that these are hard-coded into explorer.exe. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

It's a little extreme but you could get XP, I'm pretty sure it keeps the middle and last panes to a constant width, leaving the size always visible.

LOL that's some easy solution. Or go back to 95. Maybe other versions too. Or let the computer win this time. Too bad it can't be done.

Well, if it's hardcoded into Explorer, replace Explorer! http://www.litepc.com might be helpful in your quest.

Damn... how I missed this thread is beyond me, it sounds just up my street. I might be a month too late, but if anyone is still interested, I might be able to cook something up :)

At least I am still interested, replacing the whole OS was not quite the solution I hoped for :)

Can you give me a screenshot of how your explorer looks at the moment - I don't have '98.

just enough too small
As mentioned in my first post, imagine a My Computer Icon and its name in the right pane, they are just invisible, but still there if this matters.
