Irfanview's default icon

I posted a question about Irfanview a while back and now I'm back with another one! Does anyone know how to change the program (.exe) icon? I tried opening it in Reshacker, but it says it's compressed and you can't get to the icons. I even tried uncompressing it with this app called upx, but it doesn't look like it was compressed with that either. Is there another way of switching out the icons? I really want to change that ugly red roadkill looking thing!

would pe explorer work?

I installed PE Explorer, doesn't look like it works in there either, says there's an error and has opened in safe mode. I dragged Irfanview into Resthief and all the icons got extracted. If only there was a way to change the icons and shove it back into Irfanview. Well, it's not that big of a deal, but I'm convinced there's a way to do this! Hehe maybe I should just email the guy and ask him if he would change that icon (I doubt he would considering its been the same for years).

So it' s not just me who thinks that Irfanview's icon resembles a badger that was run over by a truck...
To change the icon you don't need to patch or reshack I_VIEW32.EXE. Instead, replace the icon in the Windows registry. For example, if you want to change the icon for JPGs, got to Hkey_Local_Machine\\Software\\Classes\\Irfanview.Jpg\\DefaultIcon. Edit this key's standard value so that it points to your replacement icon. I.e. "C:\ICONS\YOURICON.ICO,0". You' ll have to do it for each file type that is registered with Irfanview though.

Actually I want to change the icon for the app itself, not the file types. When I have a bunch of Irfanview windows open all I see are a bunch of ugly roadkill icons in the upper left corner. ARRRGH!

My hatred for that default icon is unrelenting - it's possibly the ugliest thing I've ever seen on a monitor.

In addition to what dave said (and acknowledging that it's not what's being asked for here), the easiest way to change the icons is actually just to edit the icons.dll file from the extra plugins. I created one a while back (albeit not totally complete) that simply made them all use the ACDSee icons instead... much nicer to look at.

somewhere around here i have an email from Irfan telling me which packing tool he used, and a suggestion for how to unpack it; it's just something haven't gotten around to yet. later tonight i'll dig it out, and post it here.

it was packed with aspack 2.12, and can be unpacked with aspackdie 1.3 (or at least that's the one i have)

That aspackdie app totally worked! I had to use the 1.3d version, and Reshacker still didn't want to mess with it, but it worked in Resource Tuner. Another thing is that the icon size and color depth had to match exactly or Resource Tuner wouldn't replace it, but I can live with that. No more roadkill icon! You guys rock!!!

This is great. Been wanting this for ages. It might be time for Irfan to consider changing his icons for something more modern and professional as befits the stature that his program has gained.

Mind telling us where you got aspackdie 1.3 from?

Yeah, Irfanview's a damn fine program. The fact that it's free somehow gives me a warm feeling in this crazy world. I agree that it could probably use a face-lift, but then again it's less commercial that way, and since I know how to mess with the icons now I've got no complaints.

Thanks for the tip loveisweakness. grindlestone, here's the page where I downloaded the app: http://www.exetools.com/unpackers.htm Some other cool apps there, too, btw.
