Turn of hard drive with program or shortcut
Is there any way of turning off the hard drives at will? That is, without having to wait for the power management to step in and do it. I have some noicy hard drives on my desktop computer that I would like to silence when I'm not touching the partitions that are on them.
It would be nice to do it with some sort of shortcut, but I can live with a program that does it. =)

Henrik,
You can substantially quiten your drives by suspending them in elastic cord inside your computer's case. I've done this myself with great success.
Check out www.silentpcreview.com they have lots of silencing tips and articles over there.

In the past I used something called HDSleep. But that was quite some time ago and on Win9x, I've no idea whether it works with 2000/XP.

what kind of drive do you have? also, what kind of noise is it producing? hard drives shouldn't produce that much noise, and if they do, it's typically a sign of failure.
check to make sure the drive is tightly screwed in and that the drives are healthy.

heh. i have some old drives that have been kicking around my various desktops since 3 gb was considered big... you should hear the sounds they make sometimes. i wouldn't dream of storing anything vital on there, but they still work as hd space.
