Virtual Desktops
I looked and if someone has posted this I couldn't turn it up in a search here. One of the best intergrated Virtual Desktop apps I have used, considering the source. I am even surprised it is configurable. About half-way down the page, very small download. XP only (it says).

Yes it is XP only, it checks before it installs what OS. Or else I'm sure Windows 2000 users could use it.

Yeah, very nice power tool. Be sure to find msvdm.
dll and modify it with ResBuild to suit your current visual style. I mention ResBuild over Resource Hacker because it actually supports the alpha transparency level that Resource Hacker can't touch for some reason. Yeah, those black backgrounds you see in the bitmaps with Resource Hacker are actually supposed to be transparent backgrounds in pngs.

those aren?t supposed to be PNGs. those are 32-bit BMPs (some kind of Mickeysoft nonsense).
ResBuild just automatically translates the format. you can use GIF Movie Gear to create 32-bit BMPs from PSDs. ResHacker will import them without complaints.

I've been waiting for ages for someone to do a non-XP VWM (for explorer) that worked like this. The one I liked most of the others that were around was sDesk, but that had quirks. There was another very small one created by, erm... I can't remember now, was posted on blizzle... anyhow, that looked great, but only hotkey switching, no command line, which would allow the shortcuts.
At any rate, it shouldn't be too difficult to come up with a reasonably good VWM that outdid what already exists... none of them outside of the XP Powertoy really suit my taste.

i always used virtuawin, as i liked it more than the powertoys one. you can move your mouse off the screen and onto another desktop, and you can drag windows between them too. you can customize the systray icon and can assign hotkeys if you want, as well as modifiers. not sure about the command line, though.
get it here:

Targaf: the little one you refer to is deskSwitch, created by azathoth. as aza's site is down i've uploaded it to
http://sryo.ctech.ca/tmpfiles/ along with other little apps he made. was going to upload them to Tweakfiles but didn't know how.
