Win2k start button in XP
New here > looking around > great site > Hallo, everybody!
Guess what, I have a question. Probably discussed before but could not find it. Trying to help someone who is trying to make XP look like Win2k. Problem is the startbutton logo. Using ResourceHacker we extracted bitmap 143 from Win2k explorer.exe and put this into XP's explorer.exe, replacing bitmap 176. Does work, only problem the background isn't transparent. Anyone know how to achieve this?
Many thanks in advance.

Wondering is this question to easy or too difficult to answer?
Please, nobody knows?

I guess we don't quite understand what you mean about the background not being transparent. Do you mean the pink/magenta color is not being transparent? Or..?
You probably want to use an image editor (at least ms paint) to make sure the pink/magenta color is the proper 255 Red, 0 Green, 255 Blue. And try just saving it as 24bit color bitmap. XP seems to be more tolerant of 24bit bitmaps than other versions of Windows.
If that doesn't work, then you could just color in you current 3d color as the logo's background.

Already tried that pink colour. Didn't work. The background was displayed pink then. Not exactly what we were looking for.
In Win 2k when I change the colour of 3D elements to lets say green the start button shows the flag, just the flag, on a green background. Now extract the bitmap with resource hacker and put it in XP's explorer or even in W2k's explorer there is a grey background. Means when I change the 3D colour then there is a green startbutton with the flag on a grey square.
Seems that making the background match the actual 3d colour is the only choice so far.
Thanks for the reply anyway
Btw. On virtualplastic under "Startbutton and menu bitmap"
http://www.virtualplastic.org/html/task_but.html I am told that the start button logo would be in user32.
dll in Windows 2k and XP. Couldn' t find it there. Am I overlooking something?

if you matched color schemes and used TClock you could copy/paste for the bitmap if the startmenu... As far as I know tclock doesn't yet support transparency for startbutton bitmaps.
Using the Windows2000 Explorer in XP is a great trick.
No transparency on the start buttons, but you can just draw the taskbar color onto the .bmp and make it appear transparent, like in Eppie.

Don't mess with that explorer.exe from 2000 in xp trick. That doesn't even sound logical. Especially if all you're doing is changing the start button.
the reason you're having problems is that Resource Hacker doesn't like the transparency level (or whatever) in that file. Its actually a png. Now I'm not graphics expert, so that explenation might be all wrong. However, the easist way I've found to deal with changing the start button in XP is to open up explorer.exe in ResourceBuilder. You'll notice when you open it up in photoshop that you actually have a transparent background, not the black smudgy one you get with Resource Hacker.
It is plenty logical. He might not want to do something that extreme, but it work fine. It also uses like 15 megs less ram. Try it. You don't have to totally switch, put it in c:\ then change your shell in the registry.
If you really want the 2000 start button, cut it out of a screen capture, then use T-Clock.
