run dialog help needed

A while back i found an article (perhaps a forum thread) which explained in detail how to assign custom commands for the run dialog box.

It told you where in the registry these (files such as "msconfig" and "notepad") keys are created, and how to make your own.

Command Creator from JiiSoft does this, but it's a shareware (and I'm too cheap to pay for software which people put a lot of effort into :) ) and I can't justify paying for software which a little bit of manually tweaking of the registry will do the trick. I consider myself to be a reasonably courageous Windows customizer, so doing such a simple tweak should be easy for me.

Now if only someone could point me in the right direction...

A little help guys?

Fawkes, are you talking about literally having a button for these commands? Say you pull your run box up and there are additional buttons that when pushed fire these apps up directly? If so, I like this idea very much, as I use msconfig and notepad extremely often. I'm not sure how to do the reg part, the dialog part I can do, adding of the buttons, etc... , but this does sound nice. :)

If you mean typing in things like "msconfig" and "notepad", then just make a shortcut with the name you want in the windows folder. Better yet, reset the path to add a new folder dedicated to these shortcuts. At work, I do that a lot with the windows dirrectory and us: n = notepad, k = k-meleon, etc. At home I made my own and use: sp = a spell checker, = = a calculator, k = k-meleon, etc. Btw, winword = M$ word if you have it installed usually, but you may have known that.

If it's more Wint's way, I'm not sure, but maybe. If we could get the thing that runs wordpad in notepad -or- sndvol32 in cdplayer, then we might be able to use that as a button. I wonder if we could make hot keys for them? Not needed, but just curious. 8)

I think he wants what I said based on reading this:
"Command Creator will help you create run-commands for use in the Start Menu?s Run Dialog. The commands can launch programs, open folders, run files and launch URL?s."
:You don't even need to touch the registry or do anything special for this. It's easy as pie, yet very functional. You can also add parameters built into a shortcut, or type them with it in the box. It doesn't matter to the app: built in is faster, but typed in yields control.

WinT: Looks like we got a new project to hack. 8) I like the button idea. 8)

Yeah Red, I like the sound of this, but I'de like a direct hit buttun for these apps, that would be nice. Thing is, I could pull up my run box right now and add as many buttons as I wanted to, but would have no idea whatsoever as to how to assign a command to them. I'm gonna have to look into this much harder. :)

*WinT runs off to hack again.

Thanks Guys for all the responce.

WinT - Wasn't exactly what i was thinking, but I do like that idea very much. Would be extremely useful for many of us. [glad I inspired something which may vcome to be (even though you were the one who thought it up)]

Red - I think I'll try out what you've suggested. Maybe it wil work for me. Might be able to link to playlists that way. :)

kmr - Once again you come to my rescue. I tried looking all through the site to find that page and somehow missed it. I used the search feture for the site but I obviously didn't use the right query string. Tghanks a lot krm, it's exactly what I had been trying to find (the whole time right under my nose).

fawkes: I find that the lil wizard for new shortcut work pretty well for this. Just set the name to something simple. Like all your nirvava albums as "nirvana". That way they are easy to type and remember. 8)
Let me know how it works for you.
