lost desktop icons and taskbar

hi i've tried a lot,
the windows key, explorer.exe, i let the mouse hover over the sides and corners, i tried to rerstart with settings from about a month ago which took about 2 hours, but that didn't work. i have to use task manager to open everything. does anyone know of a current fix for this?
i've seen a lot of posts for it, but they're usually two years old so...
i don't know if this is the proper message board , but its the only one that let me register so far. i'll check back later
