Icons in the taskbar

You know those icons in the taskbar that appear in front of the text of programs that are open? here's a picture of what I mean: http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/1967/001ef1.jpg

Is there any way to kill them so there's just text in my taskbar, something that looks like: http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/3972/002ax0.jpg

Or is there a way to replace those icons with something of my own, something minimal effort and simple like: http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/4342/003qx3.jpg

Any help would be immensely appreciated.
