There's a utility now to change the colors, find it here. It won't get less ugly though... for Windows 95, 98 and Me - no options for NT, 2k and XP. It places two entries in your "system.ini" (in the Windows folder), under

[386Enh]:
MessageTextColor=..
MessageBackColor=..

Here's the colors:

0 = Black			8 = Gray
1 = Dark blue			9 = Blue
2 = Dark Green			A = Green
3 = Dark Cyan			B = Cyan
4 = Dark Red			C = Red
5 = Dark Magenta			D = Magenta
6 = Dark Yellow			E = Yellow
7 = Dark Gray			F = White

Another utility to change the colors is bScreen.
